Students at Mitchell K-8 School watched a documentary about gun violence in Racine earlier this school year.
They were sad that so many innocent people have died as a result of gun violence.
“Violence has a ripple effect, and it does impact our young people,” Nakeyda Haymer said.
Students are raising awareness about the topic and trying to address its impacts.
As part of an eighth grade capstone project, Mitchell students recently organized a school dance to raise money for Voices of Black Mothers United, an organization that works with people affected by gun violence in order to foster healing.
Sixty tickets were sold to the dance, and $235 was raised for VBMU.
The rest of the story, including United Way of Racine County's support of the capstone project with a Youth as Resources grant, can be read at The Journal Times website.
